Triathlon.... Errr make that Duathlon

So last Saturday was my triathlon that became a duathlon. Run, bike, run instead of swim, bike, run. The swim portion was cancelled because of a algae bloom and they did not have time to determine if it was toxic or not. So for the health and safety of the athletes they had to cancel the swim. I was pretty upset at first and didn't really want to do the event at all. Swimming is my favorite part, it is also my strength in the event. I decided to just roll with it and do my best. I wasn't prepared to do two 5k's but if it came down to it, I could walk the second one.  After thinking it through I actually showed up to the event very mentally prepared to work hard and do my very best! It really helped that a bunch of my family came to cheer me on. The first run felt pretty good.  I felt a blister forming on my second toe, I think because my sock got a little damp walking in the grassy area before the race started. I averaged about 12 min miles. The blister didn't bother me after I moved my toe around a little.  I feel really good about my bike portion, 12 miles in 50 minutes. I felt pretty good for the whole ride too. When I came back into the transition from my bike leg my family was cheering me on and it gave me that extra boost needed to get back out there for run number two. At first my legs felt like rubber! I walk/jogged for the 1/4 mile then I was able to jog again. I took two walk breaks, one minute each on hills. I averaged about 13 minute miles on my second 5k. Overall my time was 2 hours 16 minutes.  I was way back at the end of the pack but not last! The good thing is that my first triathlon time was 2 hours 20 minutes, so if I would have been able to do an actual triathlon this time I think I would have been about 20 minutes faster and beat my first time... And actually I did  beat that time even with TWO runs!! I am proud of my accomplishment.  We had a big BBQ at my sister's house on Saturday after the event and relaxed for the rest of the weekend.  It was a pretty fantastic!
Next event for me is swimming across the Columbia River, it is called the Roy Webster cross channel swim and it is on Labor Day. I'm super excited!
I'll update stats when I get back home, but i weighed in at 193.6 this morning before heading out to Vegas for a quick visit and fun at the Bullhead City River Regatta with my aunt.  More posts and pictures soon!

  1. That is great, and so cool that your whole family came out to support you! We just went lazy swimming last week at our local reservoir until 2pm and later found out they closed the swim beach because of high levels of bacteria. Um, GROSS, we were THERE the day they closed it but apparently they didn't figure it out until after 2pm. Anyway, your time is great and I love how you mentally switched gears to get er done!
