a new way of doing things...

Here are the notes from my nutrition consultation yesterday with Melanie. I thought I'd put them here so I can refer to them often.

Regarding the band:

*Think of the stomach as a 1 cup funnel- it should be filled with protien first, veggies and fruits

second and hopefully there won't be any room left, but if there is then the carbs.

*The band is not fail safe or an easy way out- I have work, a lot of work to do to make it do its

thaaang!

*sugars will go right through the band- saliva breaks down the simple carbs as soon as they

pass the lips

*salad/soups will also go right through, but they aren't in like sugar because generally they

are not going to make a huge caloric impact.

*the texture of the foods to eat should not be fibrous, tough, or too doughy. Good foods

include: eggs, beans, fish/tuna, meatloaf, fruit, beggies, cheese, cottage cheese- soft chewable

protiens

*chicken, port, cuts of beef unless cooked to be tender will be difficult. sometimes using a

sauce will help get these protiens through the band.

*taking small bites is essential- like small as in the size of an almond. I'll also eat off of a

smaller plate. All bites must be throughly chewed to mush. Melanie (the nutritionist) said I

should eat slowly enough to be able to breathe and eat at the same time- no more shoveling.

*no drinking liquids with meals or for approx. 30 minutes after a meal.

*risky foods (food that does not like to pass through the band) include soft/doughy bread,

tough/dry meat, fibrous veggies, carbonated beverages, sugar

*I will start taking a daily vitamin

*I will read the book titled Mindless Eating

*I will start an exercise routine- walking to begin with, gradually adding more. Possibly re-

join the YMCA

*Attend support groups on the first Thursday of each month at 7:45/Marysville YMCA

*Consider attending the food/sugar addict group
